Toothaches Baltimore

Toothaches Baltimore

There are several things that could cause need for root canal therapy, but the most common is an infection caused by either a decayed tooth, a deep filling, or a tooth that is chipped or cracked. Facial trauma can cause root canal problems, also, but this is not nearly as common. It is possible to feel no pain and still need root canal therapy, but typically you will notice pain and it is usually severe, mostly when you apply pressure to it or try to chew. Sensitivity to very hot or very cold temperatures might also be experienced. Other possible signs include tender gums or tooth discoloration. If you notice any of the above symptoms, you should call us right away to schedule an appointment with our Baltimore general dentist. Those signs could point to a root canal problem or possibly a different problem, but they should be addressed either way.

So what about the procedure itself? It usually takes one or more visits to complete. To get started, you will receive a local anesthetic and once you are numb then our Baltimore general dentist will drill the top of the effected tooth. The nerve and the injured pulp and any debris will be cleaned out. The area will then be sealed. If more than one session is needed, you will receive a temporary crown between treatments to protect the tooth in the meantime. A permanent crown will be measured for, created, and fitted after the root canal therapy is completed.

Moving forward, while root canal problems cannot be 100% prevented, maintaining a strong at home regimen of brushing, flossing, and dental rinsing can help. In addition, regular dental exams with our Baltimore general dentist – ideally twice per year- including x-rays and a full dental cleaning will give you the best chance to avoid further root canal problems.

There are several ways that you can try to avoid dental emergencies in general. It is important not to use your teeth for things other than chewing. For example, you should not use your teeth to open things because you are at risk for cracking or breaking it. You also should not chew things like ice, popcorn kernels, hard candy, or things of similar consistencies because this too can crack or break your teeth. Unfortunately, even if you are cautious about your teeth, dental emergencies can still happen by accident. That is what our Baltimore emergency dentist at Spectrum Dental is here for. Be sure to keep our number handy in case you or someone in your family ever needs emergency dental care.
